RE: Top 10 Dumbest Evangelion Moments

THIS IS A RESPONSE TO THIS, SO GO READ IT IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING BELOW, IF YOU WANT.

Alright, I've read all of this, so let's get motherfucking started. I don't care if this entry is like 2 years old, but I just somehow stumbled upon it and as a huge fan of NGE, I might have to disagree with „some“ of your points, as they are just .. statements that might have been brought up before thinking things thoroughly, so I'm just gonna give my comments on each point you got here.

Starting from „Toji punching Shinji“, since this is the most obvious in question one and I wanna stick to chronology.

First of all.. Why would Shinji want to kill Toji with his EVA out of revenge? He punched him and Shinji has, of course, the right to be upset about that, but this isn't a reason to kill a human just because he has the means to do so. Shinji, especially in the time Toji punched him, would've never been able to kill a human, and he never thought about killing someone for such trivial reasons in the future as well. He didn't even know what it meant to kill an Angel. He just did, because he had no other option. And if he would seriously try to kill someone innocent out of revenge of getting punched in the face, he definitely would have to deal with the consequences which means he probably wouldn't be allowed to pilot anymore. I think this is obvious, because he got punished, as he used the EVA for his own purposes after Gendo killed the Angel, which still had Toji captured inside of his Entry Plug, with using the Dummy Plug System. Shinji freaked out and threatened NERV to destroy headquarters with the remaining time he had left with UNIT 01. Next thing you could see is him standing in front of Gendo with handcuffs, because he ignored his orders.  So he would've been pretty stupid if he wanted to kill Toji, some unimportant figure at that point of the story. It was a personal matter and I'm pretty sure he and Toji were aware of that.

I don't have much to say to the „Electrical Plugs“ as you call it. It's just that the EVA and the pilot would not be able to synchronize without the LCL (the „fuel source“ or the blood). LCL can not be produced by the EVAs themselves, so they need to depend on the power plug, since the LCL is coming from only Lilith, a „Seed of Life“ (Lifegiver). So the LCL is responsible for the EVAs being alive.

Regarding the statement of yours to „Death and Rebirth“ Weeeell.. I personally think that those who rate such scenes as bullshit are just not able to think abstract or simply do not understand. It is not about explaining things here with Evangelion, I think that might be something considerable, looking at the whole series itself. Just because something is not showing the obvious, not being explained or simply out of context, does not mean that it was thrown together randomly without no meaning whatsoever. Death and Rebirth, as well as the last 2 episodes of NGE anime are considered as brainwash, total mindfuck, rehab, therapy etc. There is no storyline, because it would be totally out of place. We are basically looking into Shinjis mind in this film, memories, scenarios that he might wish for in the future or had been in the past. Everything is all over the place, because, well, after third Impact, everything IS all over the place. Everything is non-existent, as well as alive, floating in LCL, the fluid of life, without space, time, linearity and so on. It basically symbolizes Instrumentality. And if you think that is a „bullshit philosophical message“, then you might have failed to understand the meaning of NGE completely as it is a story of total chaos, time loops, unalterable fate, rebirth and immense pain, emotional as well as physical pain. Instrumentality is basically everything that keeps things going, because it is the one thing that has to either happen or be prevented by each party of the series.  The title of the movie would be totally failed, if there would be any sign of linearity, as it shows us a dream-like state, not knowing if you're dead or alive and just dreaming. Also, NGE deals with the problems and insecurities of teenagers under immense pressure. They're going insane, lose all hope, the series shows their pure madness when they have nothing left in their lifes. Death and Rebirth captures all these feelings inside of every child (Shinji, Rei, Asuka, Kaworu) in one big clusterfuck, that cannot be understood by someone who hasn't watched NGE, and  it sure was not meant to be, so of course you can not expect someone to understand who has no idea of NGE. Why would you even want that? It was created as an extra.

7. Shinji masturbating to comatosed Asuka.
First of all, Shinji does not masturbate to Asuka because her breasts are exposed, but because he is turned on by her being in pain. And that's the point of the whole scene. It has nothing to do with an excuse to show underage tits or showing Shinji being depressive. It just resembles the frustration he has, seeing Asuka being totally unable to do anything, not complaining about him being a coward or holding up her pride, he's turned on by the idea of her being totally helpless and with her guards down, he has, just for once, the chance to be dominant over her, without hearing her bitching just how pathetic he is and how she is so much better than him, but realizes himself, instead of Asuka stating it, just how fucked up it is to get pleasured by humiliating her after he released his pressure for now. Also, NGE deals with the problems of teenagers, and sexual frustration is obviously a part of that. This scene was meant to shows us the cruel reality.

6. Kaworu and Shinji being gay?
Let's just put a quick reminder here, that Kaworu is indeed an Angel and not a human being. He just has the shell of a human,  so he is an outsider in this world. However he felt the amazement of human feelings, such as fear, anger, sadness, happiness, because now he is not only Tabris, but also Kaworu Nagisa. It makes him feel alive and grow affectionate towards humans, especially Shinji, who is an outsider in this world, just as well.  I personally also think that him being an Angel causes him to feel cramped in his human form, so he wants to spiritually expand and merge with something bigger that makes him feel comfortable in this form and he might only be able to do so, when 'merging' with somebody else. But that is just my own interpretation. Kaworu feels the urge to make this boy happy, who got no one who shows him what true love is, since Shinji's mother died, his father his cold and everyone else has their own issues  that come with piloting or being around NERV. Shinji simply wants to let go of this stress and pressure and be loved. Kaworu sends this aura of calmness, he is kind, honest and Shinji just feels at ease, because Kaworu seems to have no problems or unpleasant background, because he is not selfish and gives him advice. He just sends this „alien“ vibe that has nothing to do with this cruel world he lives in and makes him feel like he is freed of the issues he has to deal with, so he trusts him. Shinji also feels that this boy must be lonely, just as he is, since Kaworu has no one who came to NERV with him or cares about him.. I guess Shinji just wants to be truly loved and as long as he gets that, he does not care if the other one is a guy, because it is basically everything he wished for, so why should he be picky. Everything is messed up anyways, so what should it matter? Everyone is on the verge of death and he soon might not be able to ever love someone and discover true affection of a lover, because either he is gone, or everyone else.
Kaworu was sent by SEELE, without them knowing what the results of him going to NERV would be. His fate would be to either initiate Third Impact or die when he was still weak and under control. In the end, he chooses to die with ignoring SEELES wishes, because he does not want Shinji to die just because of him so he can be able to gain happiness somehow. Shinji was giving him a happy time while he was a human, being kind and welcoming, while Kaworu originally came to destroy everything.  Would you not feel affectionate for someone who was kind to you, when you originally planned to kill them, technically? You would feel sorry, too.
So I don't think this has something to do with homosexuality at all, but with true love and affection of two youngsters in a critical time. You don't have to prove something when bringing up two boys who fall in love. It's just the way it should be: WHO CARES IF THEY'RE HOMOSEXUAL. It's just love, so it shouldn't matter at all and therefore I think it was the right thing of Anno to do, when he carelessly added a boy that fell in love just like every other teenager does. I think it is much more appropriate than making a big fuss about it. If you got a problem with this relationship, why not talking about the relationship or the feelings Asuka has for Kaji? Or the fact that Ritsuko has an affair with Gendo?

5. Episode 9
Well, it WAS important for Asuka and Shinji to synch, because they couldn't. End of story. They had to synch in order to fight the Angels. If there are 3 children, every one of them has to synch, not only 2 of them, in order to get the perfect result. Rei can synch with both of them, because she is a clone and simply does what she's told, plus, her Unit was being repaired at that time so she couldn't fight. However, Shinji and Asuka are different and had to calm down together, instead of avoiding each other. Either of them playing this stupid twister game was simply a method to make them get along on a normal, daily basis. They couldn't do even that, so why would they want to practice in the combat simulator and get the EVAs involved outside of the testing schedule if they couldn't even manage to behave and synch in a simple game of twister. They messed up pretty bad before, emberassing NERV with both EVAs stuck in mud with their heads first, just because they couldn't synch.

4. The Ending.
Alright, let's just talk about this series being from 1995. That was 18 years ago and animation wasn't that great as it is now. However, I don't think the animation sucks, because there are pretty impressive animations of EVAs, the Angels, the mechanics, environment etc.. This was a lot of work that should somehow be praised and appreciated. Just compare the movements of the EVAs between the original series and the Rebuilds, there is not much difference except for the dynamic backgrounds and shaking pictures, keeping in mind that Rebuild came out 15 years later. I know that the stilled pictures give us the feeling of lazy animation and make us uncomfortable, but I think it is a good contrast to the action and chaos of the series on the other hand. Also, the  long scene of Shinji holding Kaworu with UNIT 01 right before he crushes him with classical music playing in the background, was, in my opinion, totally appropriate. It's like the anime itself gives you time to catch up and just think about this situation for a while, make us go through the same struggle as Shinji, as he has to catch the courage to crush his friend betrween his fingers. Also, Anno made clear, that with this style of anime, he wanted to screw with anime fans, making them feel bad about their lifestyle by making them mad with caring too much about animation than real life. So there's that. Other than that I explained everything already in the text regarding Death and Rebirth.

3.Asukas constant bitching.
I am most disappointed with your view of things on this matter. Why do you think Shinji is a bad written character? Because he is a whiny boy, who reacts most realistic to all the fucked up happenings in this big clusterfuck, he doesn't even understand? Well, Asuka is in my opinion not bad written either. Just.. why? You gotta explain yourself. Of course she looks at herself as if she's the best person ever and tries to do things on her own, because she does not want to depend on someone. Why would that be bad written or unrealistic? Anyways, where in the story did her personality make a 180 turn and when did she get depressive all of a sudden? She has always been fucked up and seriously? She saw her mother hung up and dead when she was fucking five years old. Tell me you wouldn't keep some serious issues from there on. She has always been depressed, of course she is, but she doesn't want to show it like Shinji, because she wants to be someone people look up to, but totally independent. Her mother didin't motivate her in the past, fuck, she couldn't care less about her! She wants to stand alone on the battlefield, because depending on others would show that she's weak. She got no word of appreciation from the ones she loved the most and now she got the chance to show what she's got, because it is the last fucking thing she can do on this goddamn world. Why would you always want to have an explanation of everything? Why is it bad written in your opinion, just because her personality is not to your likings? I don't like her either as a person, but I can understand her. I think the reasons stated are enough for her behaving like a bitch. How else should she act in your opinion?

2. Its attempts at being deep.
First: It's "Its", not "It's". And SecondSorry? But fuck you. Did you even TRY? Hideaki Anno got himself inspired by several other works, you can even read that in fucking wikipedia, the first site you usuaally go to to get the basic informatioms. It was influenced by many series whose content built the base for the relationships between the characters or the primal happenings in NGE. Also, Anno dealt with serious depression before he started the series, which had a lot of influence on NGE and was the main reason to create this series, too. There is so much fucking symbolism that it makes me want to vomit, because there is no fucking way I could ever explain it to you all in this post, but let's just say „Tree of Life“, „Speer of Longinus“, „Adam“, „Lilith“, „Lilim“, the 7 „Seeds of Life“ aka „ the Flower of Life“, „LCL“, „First Impact“, and all the fucking names of the Angels. Do you think this was all made up to make it sound or look cool? Let me tell you it's not, because it has to do with religion, ancient beliefs and culture. Just try to google one of these terms and have fun making out the meanings of them in NGE and even understand the explanation of these terms itself, because I won't explain shit to someone who thinks this is all bullshit and reduce such great work to some stupid words just because you don't know better. Why do you think there are still hot discussions about NGE, 18 fucking years after the series was released? Are you kidding me? This is the biggest bullshit I have ever read, I'm not even sorry to say that! You could at least inform yourself and if it's not to your likings or too much to handle, then you should just say so, because this is offensive. Just because this is an anime does not mean that it cannot have a deeper philosophical message or a huge background and has to be entertaining just like almost every bullshit anime today.

1. Shini's constant whining.
Excuuuuuse me? Where the fuck is he having a life many people would be jealous of? Alright, alright.. Let''s start from the beginning. His mother died and his father rejected him coldy, so he had to live with his fucking teacher! I think losing your parents is reason enough for someone to drown in depression nowadays. It's not that he lost them, he got rejected by them, which is even worse, because he knows that he is not loved by his father. Shinji only causes him pain, because he reminds him of Yui. And then he gets called to NERV by this so called father just to get into a big fucking Robot to fight some monster that could've easily killed him if EVA didn't go berserk. Would you like to fight a big fucking monster without any training in the first place and no idea of how the EVA even works? It's just realistic that he's depressive and whiny, because he is afraid, he has every right to be. He's only 14 years old, most teenagers in that age have enough problems with their fucking puberty. If you think it is the dream of every kid to pilot a huge robot, well, look at Kensuke, you might be right. But reality is different.
And why should he be proud to be a pilot? First thing that happens after he killed that Angel was getting a fist to the face. Everyone tells him to be proud of what he does, but he does not get anything in return at all, only pain. He constantly has to deal with the fear of people dieing and getting hurt by fighting the Angels right before his eyes. He does not even know what to do anymore.. fight for humanity to rescue them or let everyone die, because they would be better off dead. He has NO good things in his life? He has lost everything. Rei is a clone, Asuka got hurt because of him, Misato got killed, Kaji died, he had to kill Kaworu and Toji and Kensuke had to evacuate, so there's nothing left for him? Why should he be spoilt and happy? The only things that belong to him are a SDAT and a cello. He's on the verge of going insane. Anyways, Asuka, Rei and Misato did not look at him as an potentional partner. Rei was like a mother to him (clone of Yui, Shinji says he looks like a mother when she was helping with the cleaning in the classroom), Misato is the one to guide him, kick his ass and bring him back every time he hid from piloting or ran away and Asuka wanted to be with Kaji, she wanted to be an adult and Shinji just was someone who went through the same shit she was going through, so he was more like someone she was connected with by fate. So I guess his depression is totally normal and just realistic. There are enough heros in anime, so if you want to see a big macho type, you can watch something else, but NGE was made to show the cruel reality and not meant to be pleasing.

I'm sorry for mistakes, but english is not my first language and I wrote this in a rush. Anyways, This was the biggest pile of offensive shit I've ever read, it made me want to vomit, really. If you would have even tried to understand anything mentioned in this series and give some serious thought to the things you said in this entry, I might have just left it alone. This just appeared to be a good critic at the first sight, so I read it, but it most defenitely wasn't and as a huge fan of NGE, who has read so many things related to the series and put a lot of work into that, it makes me REALLY upset to read something carefree like this. Hideaki Anno is definitely someone who has my full respect and if you tried to understand his ulterior motives, you would have been able to track his thoughts, but it's even more offensive that you decided to write this huge pile of crap without even TRYING to inform yourself beforehand.
